Bio

Dr. Filippa Duke, a native of Henderson, North Carolina, earned her doctorate in Church Music (Dual emphasis in Organ and Choral Conducting) from the University of Kansas. Her document, What Sweeter Musick: A Survey of Selected Contemporary American Anthem Literature Composed for the Episcopal Church, focuses upon newly composed anthem literature by six living composers. While at KU, she studied with Michael Bauer. She received the Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from East Carolina University where she was a student of Janette Fishell. Additional studies include the Certificate in Advanced Performance Studies from ECU and the Master of Music degree in Organ Performance from Indiana University where she studied with Chris Young. She has performed recitals across the country.

Dr. Duke has served many churches as an organist, choral conductor, and handbell director. While Director of Music/Organist at Westport Presbyterian, Kansas City, Filippa was a part of the organ project that resulted in the commissioning of Martin Pasi’s Op. 24 (2016). She serves as the Professor of Organ and Sacred Organ at East Carolina University where she teaches courses in sacred music, applied organ, and service playing. Currently, Dr. Duke is the Director of Music and Worship Arts at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she conducts the Chancel Choir, children’s choir, and handbell choir. She lives with her husband, Michael, and their daughter in Raleigh.
